i think this could be neat! the main thing i want to see is if they'll try to do some sbahj gags and if so how that'll happen

i highly recommend being human.

re: cytochrome

Sounds like a solid plan, we'd honestly deserve it at that point.

@cytochrome

I will personally sacrifice myself. If a childslop YouTuber makes pregnant pomni karkat I will take the ban for everyone.

That's it, I'm gonna do what I should have done a long time ago.

I'm going to beat him to death with this hammer.

To be fair, I'm probably going to be taking at least one look at the pilot when it releases, but from the teaser we got, I'd say it's competent as an entry point. Even if it doesn't lead into a full on series, it works as a piece that shows parts of Homestuck to a new audience.

I am sort of wondering how Project [S]oundscape fares out with this going forwards though...

Re;squiddo: Berserk is also one of the most popular and influential manga ever, while Homestuck is a niche property in a medium that's widely considered "for nerds" even by other nerds. VN-to-anime adaptations can be uniquely damaging because a lot of people simply Will Not Read The Visual Novel.

By my reckoning, a worst-case scenario would be an adaptation that's not so obviously bad that it repels people on a surface level and gets the fandom going There Is No Tsukihime Anime about it, but that's bad enough that people who get into the series through the anime end up walking away with dumb takes that would be completely avoided in a better adaptation. I'd consider Ufotable's Fate/stay night adaptations a useful reference here: they sandblast Shirou and Sakura's characterizations to an absurd degree and literally cut Illya's role entirely, but they have slick enough animation and good enough PR that outsiders to the fandom still think they're decent adaptations, watch them instead of reading the VN (even skipping the Saber route because Ufotable didn't bother adapting it), and come away thinking Shirou is a bland self-insert (he's not) and wondering things that are literally spelled outright if they would just listen to Shirou talk.

A best-case scenario would obviously be a high-quality adaptation, but given Homestuck's structure I hesitate to speculate on what would even make an adaptation good to begin with. I've personally always held that if you want a Homestuck anime to be good you should probably give it to Akiyuki Shinbo/SHAFT because the Monogatari series is basically in the same boat (sitting-and-talking-centric prose with a heavy emphasis on internal monologues adapted to the screen creatively) and it's generally agreed they knocked those out of the park.

adding my own (probably unwanted) opinion to this thread, i think it could be good but that doesnt mean i think it will. a lot of things in homestuck rely on the fact that its a webcomic (typing quirks and jokes related to them, doc scratch's text, etc. also feel like a lot of character will be lost from the fact that theyll have to cut down a lot of the dialogue for it to work) that i think will be lost in translation. also, its length seems like something that could be a problem for creating a show adaptation, unless theyre only planning on doing act one (which would suck as itd leave the story on a huge cliffhanger, it also seems unlikely by the fact that karkat is in the pilot) im not sure how theyll manage to do all 6 acts in a way that makes the show easy to get into and in a way that makes it have good pacing. im just overall kind of ehh about this whole thing. (also seriously, what is up with karkat being in the pilot? i know its not like a huge spoiler cause everyone knows karkat but it still feels weird for theming purposes, like the reveal that the online trolls that the kids are dealing with are literal trolls from another planet is so much better than having it just pop up in the literal pilot..) pretty much all i gotta say on it though. i hope its fine to post a long-ish rant on my dumb opinion LOL

I don't think Homestuck is nearly as niche as you think it is. You realize in its heyday the kickstarter set the record for highest amount raised? Like. It's not anywhere near as popular right NOW but it's also a concluded work and since it concluded it's basically become 'cringe' to be something you're interested in to the wider internet, largely due to a combination of the stupid discourse that used to come out of the internet.

Regardless though there's several larger shows that attribute at least a portion of inspiration to Homestuck, I mean it's literally shouted out in Steven Universe alongside like FF7, the person who made the locked tomb mentioned Homestuck as inspiration, hell there's a homestuck reference in fuckin bluey of all things.

I personally think this is going to at worst, leave the fandom exactly how it is now, and at best will make people actually want to read the comic afterwards.

it's a forum you can post a rant wherever lmao.

I dunno if it'll be good I just don't think it'll change anything ultimately and at best will introduce more people to the comic.

my biggest concern here is actually with project s? they just got a licence and now this extremely similar project is set to overshadow them, and they seemingly were not given any advance notice about this being a thing?

I just think this is a matter of 'two cakes'

While it would have been nice to give a heads up to project S, it wasn't really an obligation and would have most likely violated specific NDA's (possibly not even ones from Hussie, as generally production companies have NDA's around all projects on all sides ) but also it's not even like this actually changes what project S is doing.

It's just another medium of things.

Alright, calmed down a bit. Haven't read the backlog but I'll assume some people clowned and promptly moved on. I'd trash the post if the button wasn't broken.

Turns out Vivziepop is only an exec and probably won't have control over the story or writing (whoops) - I don't think she sucks, but her writing chops do *not* suit a Homestuck adaptation. I think they realised this early on, though, hence the exec role.

Still conflicted about this though.

My main concern is that a Homestuck animated show cannot do the original work justice at all, given the medium(s). If I was in charge I honestly couldn't figure out how to do it without either writing an entirely different story or creating an inferior product. Which is what it'll probably be, a high-budget and more popular yet blander version of Homestuck's story, but I've made my peace with that.

Regarding the "nerd cred" shit - mostly thinking of all the growing pains from something getting more popular, especially when entering back into modern day Fandom Culture™, as will probably happen. Also, imagine a Homestuck/Helluva Boss hybrid fandom. Imagine

People already think homestuck is Cringe bc it's been out of the zeitgeist for so long. Like. No matter how bad the 'new fandom' gets I don't think we're going to get 'assaulting karkat cosplayers with buckets' bad. Like. We've already been there before so who cares lmfao

Regardless, I *would* like to see a few more anime conventions get taken over, maybe participate in it myself this time.

That would be fun.

I do not like viziepop at all, but this looks... good? Idk, it'll be interesting at least and I'm a little excited. Not a fan of dave's voice but that's the only thing i really take issue with from the trailer.

i can't really find myself excited for it outside of maybe seeing some specific sequences animated in full.. i kinda feel like its gonna lack the sort of edge that homestuck needs in terms of artstyle and tone ngl

the only thing i feel about this pilot is bad, pretty much regardless of how well it goes. on a personal level i really do think the best case scenario is just... it dying out after the pilot.

like someone else said earlier, it's a fun novelty at best and a sterilized reimagining at worst. i've seen some hopeful theories that it'll take off in a different direction a la scott pilgrim takes off, but i'm not hopeful. i like the animation! it looks great! if i didn't have my own gripes with vivziepop (which i don't care to go into) i would probably buy the june charm! but...

okay, sorry for how long this damn thing is going to be. hopefully you like reading!

"cant decide whether or not i like the visual gag where dave turns june's head around to look at the sky. definitely dont like the "LOOK AT THE SKY, NUMBNUTS!" like the way it sounded it sounds Painfully vivzie..." -- my friend, fool. generally... ugh. i'm not huge on the voice acting. as much as i appreciate that they don't sound like grown ass adults it's just.... eugh.

i fucking hate [june]'s little "as you can well.. imagine." it's just.. i don't know, it's not good? maybe i'm picky, but it doesn't fit the way that homestuck presented itself originally. there's a lot of other voice lines i'm super nitpicky about, and i've seen a lot of different opinions on specific, small things.

ultimately i do honestly think it can turn out well. i don't personally interact with viv's work, but i know it's at the least well-recieved enough to have made it onto a streaming service, so... there's at least something to be said re: the production quality. i do worry about it being truncated, but i don't think that's escapable.

i worry about project soundpage. i'm sure they'll keep working on it and it's going to be spectacularly different from this, but it's just a shame that it'll be overshadowed like this. i don't know why hussie is picking up homestuck again. i suppose i'd been under the impression that it had washed her hands of the whole thing, but i obviously don't personally know her. i just don't know who's funding it, or who pitched it, or any reason there's enough interest for it to actually be passed to a paid indie studio.

i think that's the biggest thing on my mind, though. i'm just tired.
