Homestuck Animated Pilot Containment Thread

I have no idea how to even FEEL about this. How are they gonna even translate interactive/flash stuff into animated segments? I'm sorry, but I don't think homestuck needs an animated series. Besides, if they wanted to complete the ENTIRE comic, it'd have to be like 20 seasons long.

the way i read all of this, watched the pilot, and then had to double check my calendar to make sure its still 2025 and not 2013 lol

well. if (big if) this manages to be completed in some fashion, at least the animation is beautiful? never fully understood the discourse™ for HH/HB other than "creator is an asshole" so i can confidently be like, well, the animation is beautiful at least. im excited for all of the new homestuck fans to finally experience the polarizing hell vortex that being a fan was when the comic was ongoing again. youve all had it too good for too long (/j)

there R lots of reasons 2 assume this is gonna suck ass but i feel like vivziepop being a producer isnt even one of them. her worst sins are on her WRITING. as a producer shes fairly okay aside from paying... and she isnt in charge of paying people this time around!

Nothing really ever needs an adaptation, I think a lot of the fun at the moment IS how they will handle a lot of the format specific elements of Homestuck, there’s a lot you can do in animation!

This is making me feel destiel is canon emotions again. This is like seeing shrimp colors. I'm gonna get into an argument with a thirteen year old about vriska being a lesbian. I wanna say nature is healing but in a forest fire kinda way. I tihnk I smell toast.

There's only so much that can go wrong with an adaptation that necessarily has to streamline a multimedia work, but here's something I wasn't expecting:

In the original Strife sequence, Dad's defending move was "Dotesmite". In the trailer, they misspell it "Dosemite". The portmanteau is lost now

I'm predicting þat we're not getting a direct 1:1 adaptation of þe webcomic, and some aspects of þe pacing are going to be streamlined (and I'm not gonna complain about þat). As for wheþer or not Homestuck "needs" an animated adaptation: sure, it doesn't need to exist, but you could say þat about all art ever made. Hussie didn't need to write a webcomic, Toby Fox didn't need to make a video game, etc.

The fact that Vivzie isn't in charge of the writing is already a relief.

Even so, I'm as scared as I am excited about the pilot, but chances are we'll end up with something at least decent.

As a visual novel girlie through and through I'm kind of inherently suspicious of adaptations -- Homestuck is pretty hard to adapt due to how much of it is people standing around and talking, and if the adaptation ends up sucking, that'll do a lot of damage -- but I'll be cautiously optimistic for now. The production value looks good, and Hussie and Radiation's involvement is a green flag. Best case scenario this puts a bunch of new eyes on the original material right as the sequel ramps up.

I'd compare it to berserk. it got one of the worst animes ever and it's still beloved. People are going to shit on homestuck regardless but this might get people to read the comic which would overall improve the fandom. We NEED new blood, the stagnation is what bred all this weird vitriol I think.

Did anyone else get Scott Pilgrim vibes from the trailer? I feel like this is gonna have that vibe and be very condensed from the original to fit everything in. Like people have said, you can't really do a straight-up copy of Homestuck in animation. I personally think it'd be fun and I also get why a lot of people would hate it if it turned out that way.

i’m not even interested in hellaverse as they like to call it but i have followed its production and criticism cycles. i am going to preemptively predict that when the pilot comes out, homestuck fans will get mad at it for adding too much too quickly (failing to remember what the idea of a pilot is. mirroring the pilot releases of vivzies shows.) casual enjoyers/new viewers will think it’s cool.

i do think while the pilot will be indicative of style and animation prowess spindleroo is willing to perform, it will not be a good tell for how the show would actually look episode by episode. i am excited to see it myself.

on the matter of vivziepop’s involvement: it’s really a toss-up how much of her will show through, how much of the criticism will be scapegoated onto her, and whether it actually matters in any negative way that shes involved. if we don’t see the mismanagement she has shown in the past i will be content to let her move on into a better future.

mostly, i just want the show to have fun and be fun to watch.
