As you can see, Jane, too, is quite butch'ly dressed. I do believe that butchness relies moreso on the masculine presentation than the attitude, hell, a quick search will bring up a dozen results parroting just so. While I concede that Jane is not quite there on her realisation, I believe she can get there, with time.

With regards to Meenah, I must second Arctic and Vriscourse: she does land more femme, even with the military wear posted by inversionpinchoff. The jewelry, the cat eye glasses, the makeup... it's not very practical, unlike the working-class wear of the traditional butch.

@vriscourse ok putting the jokes down a little bit. What you said is completely true. There is a problem with both media representation and fandom headcanons of characters as "butch" becuz they are simply black women wearing pants.

I put Meenah in this list becuz I am butch and like her lots. She's goals to me, Margot Perséfone Kix. That is all. As a trans woman who is also butch, the more "femme" leaning aspects of Meenah, as you put it, speak to me as gender bending things I do myself with my presentation, being in fact a big factor on me figuring my identity out.

I take some issue with the mentality that liking glitter and bling makes you less butch, or more femme. I have said in my jokey replies many times, this is not exclusively about aesthetics. These are about me, as a butch, seeing characters I feel a connection to in my butchness, Meenah being one of them.

While I understand the good intentions you came to this with, it saddens me that saying a character is butch, as a butch, can cause such a strong reaction. With all due respect, you don't know me. Don't assume my intentions or opinions.

okay, sorry. im glad that you feel seen in meenah and that shes helped you on your journey of self discovery. i just think it can be valuable to reevaluate why we see characters a certain way. always better to think too much about what we do rather than think too little!

If I'm being honest, the constant "well actually, this character wears pants so she's butch" and "this character wears lipstick so she's femme" in this post bores me to death.

genuinely: sorry if i came off too strong. i realise now you meant to post moreso about characters you personally project / see your own butchness reflected in, rather than a masterpost on definitively butch characters in homestuck-- my bad. i do push a butch jane agenda since it's really refreshing for me personally to see a masc woman who isn't masc entirely because she's a fighter or a mechanic or something, as much as i myself am a transmasc butch oriented towards more "manly" hobbies and activities.

i do see your butch meenah vision, though. her pink carabiner will rule the seven seas.

my personal position on butch homestuck characters is that jane being the first human woman to choose pants and to do so with big fucking basketball shorts is like. the half-way point in a horror movie where you're supposed think they can make it out, that they're gonna be okay. and then they fucking don't. if jane had the opportunity to start testosterone, like half the homestuck epilogues wouldn't have happened. the ghost of this not happening, and instead her doubling down on every broken image of "acceptable womanhood", haunts her character forever.
