Ancestor/Dancestor Appreciation Thread!

i really like the dancestors and ancestors both i cannot physically fit evwerything i could vwant to say about them in a thread off the top of my head much less in one reply but i vwill say: porrim and latula are avwesome and deservwe more lovwe outside of just being hot vwomen (and "mitunas girlfriend" in latulas case)

Also yes, hard agree! I think the dancestors are — by design — kind of crappy people, but in a way that’s relatable and lovable. I would be friends with Porrim and Latula. Heck yeah.

this is true a vwast majority of them havwe SOMETHIN going on that makes them kinda fucked and im not really a fan of people picking favworites through "are they a good person or not" because it inevwitably just leads to people being judged for no good reason and making it a vweird morality competition but i do find all of them entertaining in some way and thats really vwhat matters i think. least favworites gotta be rufioh and damara but id lovwe damara more if hussie didnt go the racial stereotype route vwith her for literally no reason. her story is vwery hypothetically interesting to me you just havwe to ignore like. evwerything she says in openbound.

im biased as fuck and my favworites are mituna and kankri but people make me feel crazy sometimes vwhen they take kankris bullshit lectures at face vwalue and think he actually cares about social justice and not just being better than evweryone else. hes avwful and thats vwhy i like him. the dancestors as a vwhole are vwery good targets for my lovwe of psychoanalyzing characters because you can get SO MUCH from so little screentime vwith them its avwesome for me. i dont have anything thoughtful to say about mituna i just fuck vwith that thing heavwy and vwish people vwould stop babying him because hes disabled thats a growvnass troll vwith bulges and a nook

@cronus: I agree, it’s fun to dive into them, to try to piece together their stories from the crumbs that we got. That’s a big part of the appeal for me.

Spoiler alert, I’m a roleplayer and fic writer, I enjoy exploring their possible backstories and how they would behave in other circumstances! Which is… also kind of the dancestors’ whole THING! :)

fuuuuck i need to vwrite more fics most of mine so far havwe been dancestor centered besides one but its hard to get to it vwhen your motivwation entirely comes through vwisions beamed into your head you hope to god you can vwrite dowvn before they leavwe you. honestly i could probably vwrite a lot about just what i think goes on vwith them and their backstories as vwell but i guess i just tend to keep my thoughts to myself unless i see a point in them being vwritten.

i really need to get into roleplaying again. its been so fuckin long since ivwe completely gotten into it since i get too embarrassed usually but itd probably do crazy things to my brain if i got to properly rp dancestor shit (my choice of character is extremely predictable i feel)

I really enjoy the Dancestors but I also wonder just how much fanon has brainrotted me for them compared to their straight canon counterparts lol. I'm a huge fan of Kurloz under the assumption he's like a tragic character who was controlled or blackmailed by dark forces to do what he's done (a little like the headcanon of Gamzee having been mind controlled by Lil Cal to initiate murderstuck). But I mean, either way, he's got a sick-ass design and is probably my fav of the lot.

I think they each have their own perks and there's a lot of room for the fandom to get in and put their own spins on things, which is something I really do enjoy seeing for them.

i love both the ancestors and dancestors. that said. many many people are wrong about the dancestors in the most embarrassing ways possible so i tend to stick to my corner of the internet and ignore all the cringe. my main issue with them is that, ancestors especially, you don't follow their journey as thoroughly as the kids + beta trolls. so many fandom conceptions of them are either blatant misinformation (the dolorosa not culling a wiggler, much less a mutant one, was a severe once in a lifetime outlier. jadebloods are born to cull the weak and assist the mothergrub) or an overindulgence in headcanon that they become an alternate universe version of themselves instead of what's shown on screen

@laika i actually agree with you so badly its insane.

this is why i wish we were shown more of the d/ancestors deals. a lot of people are bound to just completely mischaracterize them. you cant have a conversation about dancestors without a mischaracterization mention, WHICH IS A SHAME because the actual concept of ancestors is so cool. and everything we've been shown about ancestors has been super cool insight into the lore of alternia as a planet too. it is such a shame that they were used as nothing more than joke characters in openbound, because what little we were shown of their personalities as well as the parallels between the dancestors and their ancestor counterparts, has been sick as fuck.

i also love the concept of the main trolls being the beforus' trolls ancestors. we barely got to find out what they did on beforus, and i wish we got to see more of that outside of kankris insane ramblings

other than those grievances i just really fucking love them!!! my favorites are kurloz/ghb and mituna/psionic... this thread healed me

@spectralcatnap can relate there. its a funny situation both mix of the alpha trolls' stories having enough blanks both pre and post scratch that can lead to a lot of headcanoning and speculation and their little screentime and way they are written causing a lot of misconceptions also u_u in a way its both what make them so interesting to me (specifically their pre scratch selves) but also yea TwT

ive also got a decent amount of headcanons myself, almost every single one about Damara tho as shes my favorite, both of her i mean

Honestly I don’t mind the crazy headcanon-ing much with these characters BECAUSE there’s so little canon to go on! Tbh it bugs me a lot more to read a mischaracterized Sollux, John, Eridan etc because we DO have such a clear window into their personal growth.

With the ancestors especially, I like seeing how people interpret them. Granted, I have my own HCs that I stand by, but not so much so that other takes ick me. :3

But! There’s always going to be differences of opinion of course, and my intention with this thread is to keep it positive and share ideas, so I’ll preemptively say let’s not dunk on each other’s interpretations in here ❤️

also have to ask you since like, you created the thread and all, but ive made a few alpha trolls inspired flash-like animations before (again almost all focused on Damara bc ofc) so with this being an alpha trolls appreciation thread and all would it be fitting to share here?

the ancestors are SO fun. i remember it was part of why i got super into the webcomic/fandom in the first place, which is pretty funny because they mostly don't get much space in the story, but it was so much fun getting to speculate and theorize and basically make up a whole mythology surrounding them with other fans lol

I’m very fond of Horuss, Latula, and Dualscar. They’re amazing characters! Even if we don’t see much of them, I still enjoy them. They’re super fun to read and learn about!
