There are just so many to choose from, which one is your favorite and why should I read it after I finish reading the original thing? I am interested.
This post was brought to you by Aubrey (woo aubrey yayy!!)
My favorite is House of Dirk, personally.
That's it, I'm gonna do what I should have done a long time ago.
I'm going to beat him to death with this hammer.
There's this fanwork called Undertale, you might have heard of it
Really tho, I recommend DeSynced.

my personal favorites are house of dirk by imarriedacherub, detective pony by sonnetstuck, and one of our submarines by vastderp. they can all be found on ao3!
for purely text-based ao3 fics, i'd absolutely recommend detective pony. fan adventures is a little tricky for me because there are so many i love, but if i had to pick my top favorites i'd definitely have to go with autopraxis and karkat goes to a convention.
100% agree with karkat goes to a convention, also liminal space although im not sure if it should be the FIRST first fanwork you read
#1 dry pasta knawing enjoyer
I reccomend Alabaster: The Doomed Session (and as a bonus to that, the cerulean motley crew, due their crossover) It’s really good, and has some base homestuck as background characters.
It’s a fantastic piece that dabbles in horror through pushing the scarier aspects of sburb and troll culture to it’s limits.
A real nice piece about the folly of trolls.
It’s still ongoing and even updated recently!
It’s one of my favorite pieces at the moment!

It really depends on what you enjoyed about Homestuck. My favorite fanventure is Kittyquest, and if you want to read Kittyquest I really highly recommend reading the sort of prequel fics by the author (purplebard), which consist of the series "Pilot Light, Pale Rapture" on ao3. I agree with other commenters that you should read Detective Pony, because it was clearly an inspiration for the epilogues and for post-canon work. I also suggest Theatre of Coolty, which is a relatively short fic. Another good 'meta fic' would be "Backstage" by quartile, and its short sequel, "Backstage II: Rose on the Run".
If you have any particular tastes for specific types of fic (for example, what relationships do you enjoy? What genre, what pairings, what concepts?), I probably have a rec for you.
Everybody needs to hear someone say “Nobody else will do. It has to be you", even if it's just once in their lives. As long as you can feel sure those words were sincere, you can live through anything, no matter how painful.
at rise by brechtian is a personal favorite of mine. a great dissection of jade's character, and done immense justice by the screenplay formatting which it uses flawlessly to convey the emotion of the writing. not too long either as far as fics go
anti homestuck i hate those guys
seconding kgatc, bdth, liminal space... throwing jaderoute out there. though it's worth noting that liminal space and jaderoute are post-epilogues fics, technically. same with house of dirk, technically.
Re: jimmycarter
What a beautiful profile you got there.. wow...
Homestuck was the first fandom fics i ever read, on wattpad, they were so astronomically bad now looking back at it lol, but i loved it all the same

I will admit I'm not caught up entirely but I'm a lil surprised no one has mentioned Godfeels by SarahZedig (and co)? Might be better to hold off until post-epilogues but the first part of the fic series was written pre-epilouges so... uuuh I'm thinking of what people haven't said... theres "The Collected Tales of Our Glorious Originators and Their Journeys Through Time Immemorial" by purplebard
and
okay so you have to work with me here bc it was abandoned because canon shit happened that made things a lil bit weeeiiird... but The Serendipity Gospels by urbanAnchorite... ooh TSG how I miss you so... don't listen to anyone who says The Locked Tomb series is a serial numbers filed off rewrite of TSG they are EXTREMELY different outside of like general writing style/humor and like duos being a thing and space conquest I guess but also not reaaaally?? But like you know something has its claws in you when years later you just go "damn... I wish we got to see how that would have resolved...."
