The relationships are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of what it's like to feel true obsessive limerence, Dirk's character arc will go over a typical reader's head. There's also his internalization of a consequentialist outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterization - his personal philosophy draws heavily from conclusions any true fan will have already reached regarding the nature of right and wrong. The fans understand this stuff; they have the capacity to truly appreciate the depths of his plans, to realize they're not just generic evil - they're intended to save his friend's LIVES. As a consequence people who dislike the Homestuck Epilogues truly ARE idiots - of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humor in Dirk's erect penis as he gives Jake one final kiss, which itself is a cryptic reference to that one crush we all had in our late teens.
