has anyone here played the overseer fangames/sburb simulators?
they're browser games that are old as hell (like...over a decade old, i'm pretty sure), and i hadn't touched them in YEARS until the old-web-ish-ness of this forum reminded me of em. i remember the site for v2 going down multiple times for weeks at a time until it finally kicked the bucket, then v1 went down and i thought they were both dead for good. but i think both of them got revived only a few months ago from what i'm seeing! the ui is absolutely everywhere and a bit hard to wrap your head around since you're thrown into there with no tutorial, but that's lore-accurate, i guess. X) and it's really easy to get invested in once you get the hang of it. i remember having multiple browsers open just so i could play multiple characters in a session i was a part of. i'm pretty busy at the moment, but looking at these sites is making me want to play again hehehe. it's how i made a lot of fun facts for ocs that i still use years later!
i mention other sburb games in the topic because i want to know of more obscure ones!! tablestuck is obviously UP THERE considering it's got its own board on here, but i wanna hear about the smaller stuff! first examples that come to mind are minestuck (i mean, duh, it's a minecraft mod LOL), the genesis project, and some of the projects on farragofiction. not exactly THAT obscure, but i hope you guys get the idea.
i'm sure there are a ton more simulators out there, and i think it would be really fun to put together a group to explore small things like that in the future. tell me about them if you know of any!

i have to try tablestuck at some point but im procrastinating so hard on my book that i need to be asleep so i can pop ritalin and write tomorrow. i have played project overseer, and it's a bit clunky, but it is eventually fun to do in a group.

ohhh dont tell me overseer is over a decade old... I'm turning to DUST. I was in a like rotating rp group that did a lot of session RPs either fantrolls or original species and there were a few we attempted to use overseer alongside the rp for that dash of... realism? but the grinding and time sink required made it kinda desync but ooh... I remember those days fondly.
The other games that come to mind are the Farrago Fiction like EVERYTHING. There was(is? havent heard anything in ages) just an outright SBURBsim but also wrigglersim which everyone in my friend group got obsesssed with and LOHAE which connected to wrigglersim in interesting ways as well as was the start to like a larger expanded universe almost ARG type thing. Good stuff fun stuff
yeah, farragofiction is definitely its own rabbithole that i've spent hours on. i, too, was absolutely obsessed with wigglersim LOL. just thinking about it is making the music from the "play" screen play in my head...
this is super tangential to sburb, but i remember getting absolutely SUCKED into the strange arg mess that was zampaniosim, and i've really been thinking about revisiting it lately because i know there's so much content that i didn't get to, and even more that was added. it's sooo extremely expansive that i'd have to figure out where to start all over again. JR does some crazy shit that i absolutely love.
honestly makes me wanna make a thread here dedicated to zampaniosim to see what others think about it. maybe i will the next time i really get into it? or i might just go rejoin their discord for info... although i loathe joining discord servers just to get to know more about a project. even with the addition of "forum" channels, it's almost impossible to find decent information there without asking directly since it's spread out through thousands of messages. grr...
Huge fan of both overseer and farragofiction, I actually wrote a tutorial guide on the wiki for how to get into the medium in overseer because it was always such a complicated process a lot of people always seemed to get stuck on. I also spent countless hours on sburbsim and the other farrago browser games, all the little args and whatnot was really fun. I've not actually messed with zampaniosim much and admittedly it seems a little intimidating to approach but I do want to check it out some time.
