What the title says. I've been playing skyrim again again aga-you get it, but I've been trying really hard to actually engage with the role playing elements of the game rather than just having a "build", sparse as those elements actually are (plus a modlist of like. two. really reigning myself in over here). Been playing an illusionist utility caster who's more concerned about learning the dragon language and collecting history books than clearing out bandit camps or whatever else is going on. It's been fun, if difficult to deal with dragons and get their souls without a dedicated offensive skill, and I've been journaling the game progression and everything (My hand hurts a little but we persist). Anyways what are y'all's favorite games to really play a role in? This totally isn't me looking for recommendations after this game is over.

I do this! Or at least attempt to. When I was playing through fallout new vegas, I would journal after each session to talk about my characters thoughts and actions. It was fun! Even if I didnt have too much to write about. Ive been itching to do that again, but Ive stopped playing video game rpgs and shifted to gming ttrpgs so Ive yet to journal like that once more.

That is the main way I have played Skyrim for years now actually. I come up with a backstory "headcanon" for my character and then play accordingly. This extends to many things, some specific to each run, but most notably the fact I do not fast-travel at all, and try using the map as little as possible.

Every time I stop by a town or city, I first go to the inn, sit at the bar, buy a drink, rent a room and actually go to sleep. Then, the next day, I go around meeting the locals, stop by the market, visit the shops.

I also make a point to try not "metagaming". For instance, one time I played a character focused on magicka, and even though it was always my plan to go to the Winterhold College, I only actually made my way there once an NPC mentioned it to me.

This has made my experience with the game like. One hundred times more engaging. I still have backups of some saves, that I will periodically open up to reminisce on. I am not exaggerating when I say I have felt emotional at points. Killing dragons and leveling up is fun, but sitting in the house I built, surrounded by the trophies of my adventures, next to my werewolf wife, watching my two adoptive daughters play? That hits different.

Lol, this seems silly, but I do this with Genshin Impact. T_T I like to go to the places where the characters normally stay and then sort of pretend like they're doing stuff. I also like going to the teapot (home builder game mode) and then giving the characters rooms with stuff I think they would like, or setting them up like Barbies or whatever.

One time, I spent like a whole day roleplaying as Itto bc a random Ayato joined my world, and we were goofing off at this one spot that lets you put one of the characters in jail. It was funny!

I did a whole Skyrim playthrough where I was just a farmer who wound up going on a quest because my character found a murdered Talos worshipper at a nearby alter. I used the iron sword the Talos worshipper had on him and it was the only melee weapon I used the whole time. Found myself in the way of many a Thalmor plot.

AmI think I ended up siding with the Imperials in order to kill Ulfric Stormcloak 'cause my guy really did not like how he treated people and dividing the country.

Yeah that's fun. Personally I turn the compass off and use the map when I get lost to plot a course, and if i put a marker down and get Truly Lost I have a reason to use clairvoyance lol.

Funnily enough thats almost the opposite of what I had my character do. I'm playing with survival mode on, and I did not think this character would have any skill braving the cold, so I had her look for way longer than is reasonable for an alternative. Every bartender from the winking skeever to the bee and barb heard the road weary question "Do you know where I could study magic?" before I finally went. The trek back from the college is kind of a nightmare dealing with the cold but its worth it.

New vegas is a good one. I tried playing as a Completely Normal Person in it once (guns, survival, and i think speech were tagged. Early bird trait). The goal? Be aggressively normal. Medicine for important things only, no chems, use food for most of the healing. light armor or clothes only, guns only a Very Normal Person would use (pistols mostly), and try to follow a nebulous and unenforceable concept known to us as "The Law". So no crimes (theft, assault, reckless endangerment, so on and so forth) and no bounty hunting and the like. Walking on the sidewalks and only crossing at intersections, looking both ways before crossing, that kind of shit. Also had a weird hangup about radioactive foods and just wouldn't touch em. Their name was Sod and I still wonder what's wrong with them sometimes.

RE: The Bee's Knees

Oh that sounds fantastically fun. For the game I played with the journaled character, I was playing low charisma because I wanted to see how far I could take the game while trying to be diplomatic. Surprisingly the playthrough went far! For the kahns 75 speech check, I somehow figured out a way to beat it with 35 base speech (dont ask me how I did it, I barely believed I did it).

You should bring sod to a different fallout game. Imagine them in fallout 4 interacting with the commonwealth, Id pay money to see that.
