I think you are correct. Dirk issues with gender have been a thing since the Epilogues. He is defensive about it and is likely not doing on purpose, but he does have rather rigid gender views. My take is he didn't actively intend for that to be the case, but his Satyrs ended up with this traditional view on masculinity that Dirk himself upholds while refusing to believe he does.
