I think it's just a little bit of texturing since they're pretty big and it looks nicer than just having stark color transitions. That's what I've always assumed anyway
well i think its cus he rubs them against stuff (or digging)? thats naturally the answer for bulls since he has bull-like attributes

I also interpreted it as a texture/rough gradient thing. a LOT of fantroll artists did that and ill fully admit its actually an element I use in my own art to this day (or speckles but usually scratches vs speckles depends on the brush used lol) its just a nice way to do stylized color transitions imo
