Hello! I'm putting together this thread so that there's accessible documentation on how exactly to get online Strife Project matches set up with friends.
Strife Project uses Ikemen GO's built-in online, which utilizes a peer 2 peer system with rollback netcode. The lack of dedicated servers means that playing online requires a bit more manual set up than many games, which includes setting up your own private network that you can invite your friends to join.
This tutorial will show you how to set up matches using Radmin VPN for Windows. While Radmin is what we recommended, it unfortunately is not available on Linux and MacOS. I do not have any personal recommendations for alternatives at the moment, but there should be resources online that can help you find something to use, and the set up should be pretty similar with other LAN VPN services. There are also advanced methods to set it up like port forwarding, but that's beyond the scope of this tutorial.
- Download and install Radmin VPN from the official website: www.radmin-vpn.com
Keep in mind that Radmin VPN is external third party software and isn't officially affiliated with the game in any way.
- Turn on Radmin and create a network by selecting "Network -> Create Network" and it will ask you to pick a name and pass word for your network. People can join by hitting "Network -> Join Network" and entering the name and pass word you set up.
- The host must now go in-game and select "Netplay -> Host Game" where they will wait for the other player to join. The other player will select "Join Game", and they will be prompted to enter the host's name (doesn't really matter what is entered in this part), and then their IP, which will be their Radmin IP listed in the network. Once the address is on the player's list, they can select it and you should be all set.
- If Windows prompts you to allow the game to bypass the firewall, make sure you hit allow access.
- When you are done playing, don't forget to turn off Radmin.
Galvanistik from the community has also made a video tutorial going over these steps: youtu.be/X5hYro1KIRM
Keep in mind that the Ikemen GO engine is still in active development and as such you may encounter unprecedented errors. You may run into some issues playing online, but here are a few common reasons you may experience desyncs:
- ALWAYS make sure both players are running the same version of the game!!! If you are unsure, check the bottom right corner of the main menu. If one player is on a different version, you can still connect but the game will desync and disconnect you mid-match.
- Currently, Random Stage Select seems to be broken online. It seems as though it has a chance of randomly selecting a different stage for each player which will cause a desync. For the time being, if you are experiencing desyncs when selecting random stage, try manually picking stages instead.
If you ever have any trouble, you can ask in this thread, or reach out via the Discord for a quicker response.
Hope this guide helps, happy Strifing! ![]()
