[EE]: this was originally something i wrote for school but i thought it was neat so im also posting it here
Their parvorder, pinnipedia, also includes eared seals, fur seals, sea lions, walruses, and of course, earless seals or true seals! Baikal Seals are also called nerpas, and are one of the smallest seal species. The largest seal species is the Southern Elephant Seal, which measures 1,500kg to 3,700kg in weight and 14ft to 19ft in length, (about 40% bigger than the Northern Elephant Seal). There are only 4 species (including sub-species) of seals that live in fresh water, which are the Baikal Seal, Ladoga Ringed Seal, Saimaa Ringed Seal, and the Ungava Harbor Seal. While a couple sea lion species can survive in freshwater, they cannot remain there for their whole lives. These sea lion species are the California Sea Lion and the Stellar Sea Lion. The way seals move is called galumphing, though, the only seal species to not do this is the Ribbon Seal which instead "crawls" forward. During mating season, male Ringed Seals will start smelling like gasoline to attract females. Algae can grow on seal fur, though it gets removed when their fur sheds. Ribbon seals have exactly 4 rings or stripes on their fur, one along their neck, near their tail, and 1 around each front flipper. These stripes do appear on pups, too, but only as very thin lines. There's a video on YouTube called "Crybaby learns to swim" which shows a weaned Weddell seal learning to swim a bit later than they should've (IIRC). Those are all the seal facts I have currently.
[EE]: any corrections and additional facts are awesome btw
