ok so this is gonna be a messy thread i wass trying to talk about this on the discord but it was so shit for discussion and i wanted to start a dialogue about it because it tends to be an overlooked pattern in the comic: guardians in homestuck are often more reflections of the kids they are the guardians of's classpects than that of themselves in their scratched versions almost as if they only gain their own personhood when they are a player of sburb/sgrub like vriska to mindfang and aradia to the handmaid they all only get to serve the purpose of furthering the development of the main characters often even being just a fictionalized version of their ancestor that lived a terrible life and died, their lives are left unfulfilled. even the "cool ones" like alpha dave and rose never get satisfaction with the things they desired the most as their beta selves in being able to reconcile or even meet with their guardians as adults

im always thinking about the slow reveal that most of the guardians Knew that sburb was going to happen in some way. like. really furthering that idea that they were there for the players development and naugh tmuch else

Mixed feelings on this. Definitely agreed that attempting to like, apprehend Bro as a Prince of Heart is gonna distract you from the purposes he's serving as Dave's foil, but it also seems like the kids' limited knowledge of their guardians kind of produces it? Like because they can't conceptualize their parents as people they get these distorted reflections of themselves instead when trying to explain their behavior

The success of a paradigm may not be for the reasons it claims (i.e. accurate description of the world). This is good.

yeah. i think what originally stemmed from this was trying to conceptualize why the guardian themed rooms in jade's house are somewhat more related to the mythos of the betas than their own interests and trying to find a pattern within that. it definitely has to do with the perspective of guardians being deliberately abstracted by the perspective being from that of kids.

my working theory on a lot of it is i feel that theres sort of a meta element that skaia is a "story machine" and perpetuates itself through the heroes journey and deliberately ignores things and people that don't fit into it but on the other hand thats sort of explainable from real life context of a person writing the story ignoring things that don't matter LDFJAKLJJALGGJDALGALGJJA but i feel like in a story like this it could very well be woven into it with intention
