Legacy of Kain is an amazing and legendary video game series known for its intricate plot, its tortured characters, its unique vampire mythology and its labyrinthic time travel.
It starts with Blood Omen 1 in 1996, a 2D Zelda-like with torture spells and a lot of dark thematics, and sadly almost-concludes, five games later, with Defiance in 2003.
Seven years of the most fantastic video game story, then two decades of development hells, no new game out except for a battle arena spin-off... until the end of 2024, when SOUL REAVER 1 & 2 REMASTERED got released! A full rebirth for the franchise, also accompanied by all-new comic book spin-offs, a lot of goodies, a ton of bonus, and the release of the legendary Lost Levels!
Legacy of Kain has flaws (mostly gameplay flaws) but it is an extraordinary and unique experience, and Soul Reaver 2 in particular is the best video game story ever written.
Back then, Legacy of Kain was noticed for its incredible quality of writing and original worldbuilding, the Shakespearian dialogue served by, well, actors and actresses of classic theater formation, amongst them:
- René Auberjonois (Odo in Star Trek Deep Space Nine),
Tony Jay (Frollo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, MegaByte in ReBoot),
- Michael Bell (one of the most well-known voice actors of the 80s, you basically heard him everywhere),
- Simon Templeman (Gabriel Roman in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Loghain in Dragon Age, Admiral Han'Gerrel vas Neema in Mass Effect) as the first title character, Kain himself.
