The original Homestuck really doesn't have many standout designs, that didn't seem to be Hussie's strongsuit. Most characters wear just tshirts with a symbol on them, and several of the god tier outfits are just simple colored clothes (looking at you john), that don't even have great color pallets either.

to quote Harry Anderson Egbert, "the SHITTIEST DUDS YOU HAVE EVER SEEN."

A couple designs I really do like are Eridan's, Dirk's, Roxy's and Lord English's.

The fans have really picked up the slack though, the amount of amazing June and Ultimate designs ive seen is so great.

HSBC personally stands out to me, credit to the pre-Roach team because Ultimate Dirk really has a perfect design in my opinion, especially when rendered up later in the comic.

• Are there any other Homestuck characters that I forgot that you think rock that shit?

• What HSBC or Fan designs do you really enjoy?

Honestly I think John fucking rocks his windsock, and it's really kinda become an iconic look for him and Heir as a class.
Eridan also has some thought to invest in his fashion, and so does Feferi, but the others kinda... eh.

I especially don't like the base God Tier outfits. With the exception of Heir they all kinda just look like glorified pajamas. I wanna see GT outfits with some class, maybe a bit of rugged look, Knights having armor, that sorta thing.(Don't get me started on Bard's codpiece EUGH)

Im a big fan of nekromeowncer's god tier redesigns, check em out here https://nekromeowncer.tumblr.com/post/730280076151848960/ive-always-wanted-to-make-my-own-god-tier

Did we read the same comic? All of Kanaya's outfits in her Wardrobifier, the Wise Guy Slime Suit, the Junior Ectobiologist's lab suit, Dave's baseball tee fit, Dave's many suits, all of Jade's dresses, Rose's velvet liquor bag dress, Rose's Hot Topic outfit, Porrim's outfit, Latula's outfit, Snowman's outfit, Aranea's cute little dresses, the harlequin Black Queen in the pre-scratch session Mom Lalonde's outfit, Calliope's outfit, Jake's cute little shorts and sleeveless top (with optional jacket), Roxy's purple dress, and all of the Trickster outfits would like to have a word with you.

@magicmirror I was mostly referring to the basic/god tier outfits since those are worn around 80% of the time for most characters, but those are also all good choices, I do feel like theres far too many suits it the alchemy catalogue though

I agree that Homestuck had some great outfits, but OP isn't wrong that ^2 and BC both have been nailing in that harder. Great outfits in Homestuck were often temporary or overdesigned or kinda random. I think there's something to be said for postcanon's much stronger characterization through its visuals.

I always liked the simpler designs of the kids in early Homestuck, particularly I think Jade fits the best in that early style and her witchy aesthetic when she ascends and goes Dogtier is also pretty cool. If I had to pick a beta kid who's like "the best dressed" it would be her.

And for what it's worth those simple Godtier duds are pretty neatly designed for how little effort was put into them lol. I think the blue pajamas John wears are pretty iconic, I can't really imagine him wearing anything else (unless you count the green ecto-suit he wore that outfit also sticks into my head a lot) And even though Dave wore a lot of suits and stuff, I feel like his coolest outfit was just his Godtier dudes when he was chilling on the meteor. His cowl is kind of lame looking, so I can see why he doesn't wear it that often even though I think it's supposed to make him look more "Knightly" lol

Rose has a lot of good looks and I can't pick just one so I'll just say she and Jade were also the best dressed.

That's fair, I think most of the god tier outfit work well for the characters but I dislike how little it represents them, John's windy outfit sorta loses its luster when you see it sported in a darker blue on Equius. Its a shame the concept of alchemizing the god tier outfit in the original Homestuck lived and died by that single time Meenah mentioned it, because I think seeing it combined with with other outfits theyve worn would be really cool. HSBC definitely lives up to that, Meat Jade before her redesign felt like a good mix between her three in the morning dress and her god tier outfit, even if it is a... bit much. Meat Jade's outfit

Simply have to agree with Sami Hannes. the windsock is a truly iconic bit of costuming and the only reason anyone would say it's not a "standout design" today is that it's been so long that we just think of the god tier costumes as normal now... but if you think of Homestuck and John Egbert, you think of that crazy tracksuit and hood! It may not hold a candle in terms of sheer cultural reach, but just in terms of design philosophy I think the Heir of Breath easily stands on the shoulders of the true icons of cartooning like Superman and Spider-Man.

Maybe it is right to say Homestuck is lacking in terms of "fashion", but as far as sheer design is concerned Homestuck has an enviable track record. How many of us COULDN'T pull out a pencil and immediately start scribbling at least somewhat accurate renditions of the twelve trolls? They're not fashionable because fashion was never the aim, but they're stark and recognisable designs. You'd certainly never be at risk of confusing two of the trolls for each other.

Hard disagree with Sami about the codpiece though haha. It communicates so clearly the kind of character Gamzee is supposed to be at that point! I get the arguments people make about how lame or nonsensical a lot of the class+aspect combos look, but to me that doesn't matter because the classes and aspects were not actually designed for anyone's OCs, they were designed for the specific characters that wear them in Homestuck, and they serve that purpose PERFECTLY. The mixture of flowing cape and toothed cowl with casual sweatpants and sneakers are easily just as iconic to Dave as the windsock is to John, and maybe it could be argued that the Seer of Light's colours are a little odd or hard to look at, but who can deny the sleek effectiveness of a Rose's hood and sandals ?! Don't even get me started on the whimsy and magic of Jade's stripey stockings and magic red slippers!

There's a certain potency in simplicity that I think a lot of people forget about in our modern day. The reason I mention Superman and Spider-Man and their bright primary colours is that the parts of their designs that sometimes look silly to us today and which artists often seek to change in their modern reinterpretations were usually very deliberately crafted to be easy to draw over and over again while still going POP on the page and when posed in action! And I feel that Homestuck's best designs really hit a lot of those same achievements.

Which isn't to say I think hs2 has forgotten or lost sight of that; rather, it's a different story which is making really strong moves with the aim of distinguishing itself not just narratively but visually from its predecessor. I don't think I would have ever wanted to see Rosebot or Dirk's ultimate ninja scrubs in the original Homestuck, but I see them in Beyond Canon and I can immediately jive with what the artists were aiming to do. To me it's reallt

I'd actually say most God tier outfits look dope. As was discussed here, John's look is more plain but iconic, Rose, Jade, Jane, Roxy and Dirk's are fabulous. Dave and Jake stand out in how fitting but comparatively mundane theirs are to me. But I'm also a simple dog and love getting new outfits for whatever reason so Beyond Canon has been dope in that regard. You can link up an outfit to a certain part of the story and that's a ball.
