In the Epilogues and Beyond Canon, Karkat and Kanaya are genuinely the only characters in the whole story who seem to have a pretty good head on their shoulders and who question basically everything going on around them. But they don't have the power or agency to change anything happening until it's too late, since they're the only ones of the original group who aren't Gods.
I know a lot of people do feel vindicated by Kanaya and Karkat telling the others off in the end about how Jane's a fascist and how most of the current situation is her fault, but I don't see many people really asking why this is. Even in the Meat timeline, the ONLY person who questions what the hell Dirk is doing is those two, and the only reason Kanaya stops questioning it is because Dirk literally has to mind control her to not think a certain way.
But the moment he's gone, she regains her senses and just starts questioning everything all over again. These two consistently seem to naturally fight against whatever weird bullshit is happening in Candy and Meat narratively. It makes me wonder why them, though?
The other troll who seems to instantly know something's wrong with the world they live in is Vriska, but she gets there way later than everyone else. Karkat and Kanaya had years to grow used to the uselessness of the humans around them, so I kind of think that's why they decide to just move on eventually and live in this messed up world despite the circumstances saying nothing here "matters". Karkat even says that he doesn't care if nothing here matters because he can't afford the luxury of NOT caring, he has to still live with it all, and this is the only hope for his people and the ONLY world that he currently is in. This messed up fascistic world with the humans and troll war is the world he is stuck in and there's nothing he can do to change that, since he's not a God with meta powers.
I want to know what you guys think, do you have any theories about why Karkat and Kanaya seem to both "have their senses" so to speak in both realities, even though they're basically just average as far as the cast of characters goes power wise?
TL;DR Karkat and Kanaya are the only characters in both realities who, despite not being gods in any capacity, can keep their senses in a meaningless world. I wonder why?
I think all the time about how Echidna demanded an audience with Kanaya and Karkat before releasing the tadpole that completes the Genesis Frog, simply because she wanted to size up the people who would be guiding and watching over the new world and its trolls. I've always been inclined to take Echidna's positive appraisal of them seriously. And maybe some remnant of that inkling of destiny that Echidna perceived in them is still present even in a world that has (in kanaya voice) Utterly Eluded Their Constructive Involvement
