In topic:"The Backmoons" - a grey space between reality and dreaming in Homestuck: Beyond Canon

A small tangential thought to the above; the other pop-cultural allusion that stands out from Crowbar's Intermission but doesn't seem to get a lot of oxygen is this brief depiction of Jack Noir's mecha being constructed on the moon (above), which seems to me quite obviously in communion with the Evangelion film series, wherein one of the new Evangelion units is constructed, again, on the moon (below, courtesy of EvaGeeks):

(Is Die's crimson past-trail in this panel even supposed to evoke this film's distinct trail of blood splattered across the lunar surface...?)

The Rebuild of Evangelion had a lot to say about the relationship between author, fiction and audience that feels relevant to Beyond Canon's broader themes, so much so that it would be a diversion to dive too deep into it here; more pertinent to the matter at hand is that moons - both real and artificial - are a prominent motif throughout the entire Evangelion franchise. NGE's overarching plot revolves largely around a pair of cosmic eggs or seeds containing the genetic material of alien gods, which arrived on the Earth billions of years in the past in the form of a pair of miniature Black and White Moons. Central to NGE's psycho-mythos is the desire to rejoin with the Moon-egg from which one originated; an underground base which is one of the story's central settings was also constructed inside one of said Moons.
